BMW Driver Killed Crashing Into Dump Truck Inside Maryland Work Zone: Sheriff

One person was killed and a second hospitalized after a BMW driver crashed into the back of a dump truck while driving through a construction zone in Harford County, sheriff says.

Fallston resident John Derwart, 78, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon following a reported crash on Route 165 in the area of Furnace Road and Hunt Field Way after crashing a BMW 328i through Jarrettsville.

According to the sheriff’s office, Scott Thommen, 54, of Delta, was driving a construction vehicle in an active work zone while Derwart was traveling north on the highway when they collided.

Derwart died in the crash, and a passenger in the BMW, Joan Bridges, 81, also of Fallston, was taken by first responders to an area hospital as a precaution.

The crash remains under investigation.
